Is It Possible To Go Green When It Comes To Cleaning?

These days, it seems like everyone is trying to go green. There are good reasons for that, too. Going green can reduce certain costs and have a big impact on the overall environment. In some cities, green initiatives are even becoming law. But while businesses of all kinds are working towards going green, cleaning and maintenance departments often get overlooked. The reason is easy to see – it can seem like when it comes to cleaning supplies and break room supplies that there are really no options other than non-green ones. But it is possible to go green in some ways.

Here are some tips for moving towards a green solution when considering janitorial supplies:

  • Go For Recycled Items – Today, paper towels, toilet paper, and other similar items are actually available made from recycled paper. While it may cost a slight bit more, it is worth it to those looking to go green. Recycled paper towels and toilet paper are readily available.

  • Look For Tree-Free – Additionally, some paper towels and toilet paper rolls are made from other products like hemp or sugar plants. These are much more costly, but have no trees at all in their composition.

  • Eliminate Certain Supplies – While you can't get rid of the use of paper towels, garbage bags, and certain cleaning supplies, you can stop providing disposable coffee cups or other supplies. By asking employees to bring in reusable mugs or cups you'll reduce the impact on the environment and save a bit of cash, too. Styrofoam is terrible for the environment and well worth eliminating. If you must provide cups, there are also recycled options available.

  • Biodegradable Options – There are several garbage bags and other materials used by cleaning departments that are actually designed to biodegrade faster than regular products. They can help a company go green as well.

  • Green Chemicals – It sounds like a misnomer, but there are certain cleaning products that are designed with the environment in mind. Their formula helps reduce their impact on the planet and might actually help reduce irritation in humans as well. Not everything will have a 'greener' alternative, but many cleaning supplies today do.

These are just a few of the different options out there for going green when it comes to cleaning a business. In most cases, it's a better idea to try one or two instead of going 'all in' all at once. But the fact remains, there are options that are worth thinking about.
